Writing the softer side of D/s

When I began the Mine series, I knew two things about it: It would be about two men in a non-typical Dom/sub relationship. I should say, they’re in a D/s relationship not usually represented by books, as I’m not sure of the percentage of kinky couples who operate this way.
Steve and Zack have a power-exchange based on love, trust, and domestic discipline. While Steve is the Dom, he’s far from a sadist. In fact, the only time pain is used between them—aside from the sting of a spanking—is during Zack’s one punishment. They are, however, sensation players. So, the thud of Steve’s flogger against Zack’s body is enough to get his blood rushing to all his sensitive parts. Of course, someone using a flogger for pain would use a different one than someone purely seeking sensation. For softer play, a wide many-tailed flogger made of suede is best. The varying levels can be said of most play. Another thing Zack and Steve get into as the books go on is bondage. The feeling of helplessness and connection can pull other man out of their head when need be. Yes, I said either of them, more on that later.
First, let’s talk about the domestic discipline. I’m sure you’re all curious as to how Zack could possibly only be punished once in four books. I believe a lot of it has to do with the rules Steve has in place, including: Showing respect at home and at work, going to sleep at the same time, taking care of himself through healthy eating and exercise, and bringing Steve coffee in bed in the morning. Steve was very careful to not write any rules into the contract that he wasn’t willing to enforce, and none that weren’t of benefit to Zack, himself, or their relationship. Because Zack understands the reasons behind the rules, he’s less likely to break them.
The power-exchange in their relationship may be considered unique as well. Steve likes Zack happy, and encourages him to express his feelings and opinions on things concerning their lives together. That being said, if there’s a disagreement, Steve makes the final decision. Though, it isn’t always easy, Zack respects the decision. Between punishments, Steve employs maintenance spankings to level Zack’s emotions and remind him who’s in charge.
So, one might ask why I chose to use the softer side of BDSM in my books. Even if you didn’t, I’m going to tell you. The market is inundated with Sadists whipping their human property, degrading them emotionally as well as physically. And if that’s what people are into, it’s fine and I respect their choice, but I wrote the books I wanted to read. BDSM is a wide, varied lifestyle and I wanted to show more than one side of it. I feel in my heart there will be other readers like me who will see the beauty in the purest love that willing surrender brings.  Casting is free on Smashwords, please check it out if you’d like to learn more.

Casting: Steve Michaels had one goal for the evening: drink just enough to get through the press conference in promotion of Ben’s Life, the new television series he’s directing. In public, Steve and Zack are the picture of professional partners. However, behind closed doors, their partnership is taken to a new level. They engage in a carefully constructed Dom/sub relationship that not only brings them pleasure, but keeps Zack from slipping back into his wild ways.

Cutaway:  Two years after Steve Michaels called, “Action!” on a new phase in his career as co-producer on the television show Ben’s Life, the lights go up again on his Dom/sub relationship with actor Zack Greene, but Hollywood cameras don’t always capture the truth.
A mention of Steve’s past in the BDSM scene has Zack craving new ways for them to connect. All of the couple’s concerns fall away when Steve and his ex, Peter, are in a car accident. The last ones to know, Zack and Josh, Peter’s slave, rush to the hospital. The injuries from the accident force the dominant man to set aside his pride and accept help from Zack. That’s a Wrap: As the bright lights of Hollywood dim, futures, relationships, and identities are thrown into question. The once successful television show, Ben’s Life, is in big trouble. For Steve Michaels, the director, in a long-term Dom/sub relationship with Zack Greene, the lead actor, this means impending unemployment.
Through training Josh as their domestic slave, coupled with the care he received during recovery from a debilitating car accident, Steve opens himself up to role reversal in his relationship with Zack. The occasional release of control on Steve’s part, and Zack’s adeptness at taking it, grants them freedom and stability to meet challenges as a unit.
But when the life they had planned is put in jeopardy by one phone call, Steve and Zack will need to expand the safe haven they’ve created together to include one more. Priorities shift and a different light shines the way to new beginnings. Amazon

  1. Well-explained. I love this dynamic, and I don't see it as the 'softer side' of D/s. It's just D/s as it plays out between these two. The beauty of it is, it works for THEM. Lovely.

    1. Thank you, Jade. That's a high compliment coming from you! I'm a big fan of your work.
